Making Ready Made/Turnkey Websites Work

The idea that you switch your ready made/turnkey website on and-- "hey presto"-- you make money from it, is to put it mildly ---a myth.

What's usually missing from all the glossy text telling you how many turnkey sites you can choose from and how they offer super products, how much you can expect to make etc, etc... Is that

  1.  There are thousands of others with the same site selling the same products

  2.  To make money you need visitors.

This is in some ways the same as a traditional website and in some ways different. So lets see how a turnkey website compares to a traditional website that you build yourself and use to promote affiliate products.

Website property function/task Traditional website Turnkey Website
1 building/making website Need to build it from scratch Pre-built
2 affiliate programs Need to locate affiliate programs to promote and sign up Already built into site you sign up when you sign up for the turnkey website
3 Content control and creation You produce the content and hence have complete control over it. Two types

Limited Content control or

No Content control it is produced for you.

4 Look and feel of website-layout, colours, navigation, logo etc You have complete control over look and feel ( logo etc) Often you can create own logos and have limited control over look and feel
5 Traffic from search engines (free traffic) Can get free traffic from search engines by optimising web pages etc You don't control any of the content so this isn't possible directly
6 Traffic from other sources e.g. pay per click (PPC), advertising Need to market like any business to get traffic Need to market like any business to get traffic

Now anyone trying to sell you on turnkey websites focuses on points 1,2 and 3 and maybe 4. They will totally fail to mention points 5 or 6 or if they do, they phrase it as- just like any business you need to advertise.

The problem with the phrase :

" its just like any other business you need to advertise "

Is that - it isn't true - on the web. Most websites get the majority of their traffic (90-100%) through the search engines without paying anything for adverts!

So we have a real dilemma. The really nice thing about turnkey websites is that they are already built and you don't have to spend hours and hours learning website design and creating hundreds of web pages .

However, that also turns out to be the problem as it takes away control of the content and it is the content you use to get free search engine traffic. These are actually similar problems facing mini-websites and you can overcome them using the same  techniques:

  • PPC

  • Article Promotion

  • Feeder Sites

Pay Per Click

With Pay Per click you pay for the traffic. This is obviously only a viable strategy if your website makes more money from sales than it costs in getting traffic. This is discussed is in more detail in website promotion.

Article Promotion

This is only viable if you website theme lends itself to writing articles. If it isn't then you have to be a little more creative and use similar/related themes for your articles.

As an example if you have a sex related site you could write an article on popular adult toys and link it to your site.

The idea with the articles is to submit them to article directories and they will in turn distribute them to other websites. People who read the articles may be interested to follow your resource link to your website.

Feeder Sites

This is a popular technique regardless of your website type. You use other sites (usually ones that you own) and link them to your turnkey website. This can be an extremely effective technique when the themes are closely related.

As an example if you had an existing site that dealt with adult problems/issues you could very easily link it to a site offering adult movies, toys etc.

This technique is what many of the very adult sites use.

Theme Directories serve the same purpose but as you don't control the directory they are not as powerful . However they should still be used.
