3 Ways to Add Content to Your Website

There are three main methods of adding content to a website:

  • Using ftp

  • Using file uploads from a web page

  • Editing the Content directly on the site

Using ftp

This is this most common and oldest method. With this method you edit your content off-line on your PC using an editor like Dreamweaver or FrontPage and then you copy it to your web host using an ftp client like Filezilla. See Uploading web pages.

This method is supported by almost all hosting providers but many people experience problems with it as they find it too technical.

Using File Uploads from a Webpage

This is often called web ftp and is much simpler than traditional ftp in that you don't require to install and configure an ftp client. You simply go to a web page and upload from there.

Sitebuild-it provides this type of upload capability if you are building your pages offline.

You will also find standard hosting packages providing this type of functionality through the control panel.

Although it is easier to use that standard ftp it tends to be slower, but that is not normally a problem, as you mostly only upload a couple of pages at a time.

Create and Edit the Content directly on Website

In this scenario there is no need to transfer the content to the web server as the content is created and edited directly on the server. Platforms like WordPress and sitebuild-it provide this as the main content creation option.

From a user perspective this is by far the easiest option, however you may find that you need to learn a little HTML to use this properly, and linking to internal pages is not as easy as when using offline web editing tools like FrontPage etc.

However for most website owners who only create/modify  the occasional web page then this is the ideal option, as it doesn't require you to master ftp and you don't need any additional software.
