How the Page and Post Title is Used

Every page/post that you create has a page or post title.

This is not the same as the web page title that you may already be familiar with in standard web pages.

However you will find that the two are related.

Web Page Title

On a web page the page title is a hidden meta tag. It is however visible on the top of the web browser window.

The screenshot below shows where you can find the title and opening headline

The blog name plus the post title is used by default as the title (hidden meta tag).

Therefore if you had a blog called WordPress revealed and you created two pages with post titles of:

Products and Services

Then the page title would be:

  • WordPress revealed:Products
  • WordPress revealed:services

The post/page title is also used as the opening headline. On most web pages it is usual that they are different and from an seo perspective it is better if they are.

This is not good search engine practise, but can only be changed by either installing a plugin or modifying the page/post templates.

The post title is also used by default as the page name but you can easily change this by using the post slug. If you type a name in the post slug it overrides the default page name which is the title but with any spaces replaced by hyphens and converted to lower case.

We will be covering how to seo your WordPress website in future lessons.
